saturday morning chores

inspired by the May poetry prompt calendar
Thank you, Denise Krebs!

It’s Saturday morning and time for chores —
one day break from the 20 minute sun salutation routine but plenty of workout
that follows a pattern
from removing the desk chair and the floor rug at the food of the bed
(that will be at the bottom of the stack with the others to be shaken out)
before stripping the bed — the comforter thrown open on the now-empty floor
the bathroom towels, body scrub, washcloths and eyeglass cleaners collected
and tossed into the collapsible hamper
followed by the tablecloth, napkins, dishcloths, hand towels and apron from the kitchen;
the coat zipped and stuffed into a laundry bag — the first at the bottom of the dark cycle;
the light linens lobbed in the laundry basket awaiting their turn in the machine
after the bathrooms are wiped clean with the microfiber rags and added to the pile

but before the bathrooms can be cleaned, the hot water set to boil as a prevention against drain clogs in the bathroom sink and shower

transitioning from kitchen to bathroom deterred by attention to greasy stovetop and sticky countertops, a possible nearly full dishwasher to load and run

bathroom cleaning resuming with toilet wands and squeegees
as the final course appears over the horizons — floors

the hand held vacuum for baseboards and car detail
the upright for the carpets
the mops with various attachments for the bamboo

—time to switch to the light cycle now including the reusable cloths and mop heads
yet not until the darks are shaken crisp and transferred to the dryer (with delicates rescued to dry safely on hangers)

wrapping up with a flourish — water for the house plants

until the dryer beeps and it’s time to fold (and possibly iron).
