Leaf Walk
My walks are measured in steps
and also in steadiness of balance
during morning yoga practice.
In autumn though, leaves are a factor.
Leaves the yellow of butter
also freckled with brown
also melting into orange and red
beckon me to bend.
The five points of star-like, hand-like maple
The rounded stubby fingers of oak
The open fan of the gingko
The pointed oval of the elm cast a spell.
Last week, a curious man on a bicycle stopped
to offer a grabber for my endeavor
I declined and explained I was a teacher collecting for my students.
The next day, I had a bag full of curated leaves and a twisted back.
neighborhood leaves
The ginkos are not native to Michigan.
